Being the quietest and remotest of the Western Sporades it has great charm, especially up in the old town of Hora, a worthwhile walk or bus ride to the top for spectacular views and watching the sunset. There are many bars and tavernas in which to enjoy a drink or dinner at the end of the day. Pelagos or Monastery Island. Uninhabited for most of the year, this is a superb anchorage where you can really get away from it all. Skopelos, famed for its pine-clad hills and walnut trees, is a favourite destination for serious walkers. The natural harbour of Panormos is the inspiration and setting of the book 'Gates of the Wind'. Many of  it's beaches are only accessible by boat and are covered with white pebbles. The island of Skiathos has an international airport served by many UK airlines and transfers couldn't be easier - the harbour is less than 5 minutes away by taxi.  The town has every facility you could wish for with dozens of restaurants overlooking the large harbour. The town has every facility you could wish for with dozens of restaurants overlooking the large harbour. From our base in Skiathos harbour there is a huge choice of places to go.  Many destinations are just 2 or 3 hours gentle sailing away, with longer trips available for the more adventurous.  In a 1-week trip, it shoud be possible to visit 3 or 4 different islands, whilst 2 weeks would allow the sort of itinerary shown in red on this map.

The islands of the Northern Sporades are steeped in history and featured in the voyages of Jason and the Argonauts. Many ancient buildings and ruins can be found, especially on the more remote islands - there are even rumours of buried treasure!

Skiathos claims that it has more beaches and better beaches than any other Greek Island. This is hard to argue with, as not only are there enough beaches to visit several a day but many are of the finest yellow sand.

Koukounaris is the longest beach on Skiathos and a popular holiday destination with many exclusive villas nestling on the hillside.

Skiathos Town enjoys a double bay with two harbours, one for yachts and the second for fishing boats. The twin bays are lined with cafes, restaurants and bars catering for every type of cuisine.

Alonnisos is well-known for its interesting guided walks and for its wild flowers. It is the only inhabited island in the National Marine Park, home of Monachus monachus, the Monk Seal.
